Thomas "Tommy" Milton Britt

December 11, 1948 ~ September 8, 2021 (age 72) 72 Years Old

Tribute

Thomas (Tommy) Milton Britt, age 72, of Mary Esther, FL, passed away peacefully and went to join the Lord on September 8, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife and son.  He was born in Springhill, Louisiana on December 11, 1948 to the late Travis and Dorothy Spencer Britt.

Tommy was a long-time resident of Fort Walton Beach and Mary Esther for the last 50 years.  He grew up in Springhill, Louisiana where he attended Springhill High School before going on to college at Louisiana Tech University where he played baseball and earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He would later earn his Master’s Degree in Education Leadership which would guide the path for the remainder of his life.  He met the love of his life, Barbara Nichols in Springhill in June of 1969 and they were married on August 21, 1971.  On their honeymoon they visited Northwest Florida and decided they never wanted to leave. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

Tommy devoted his life’s work to children’s education, coaching, and his Church.  During his 40-year education career, he taught math classes, developed curricula, and held numerous administrative duties, all of which were topped off when he became the Assistant and then Principal at Destin Middle School in 1999.

Tommy Britt was an outstanding high school football coach. He loved to mentor and coach young men to become the best they could be. During his football coaching career at Fort Walton Beach High School, the Vikings captured two State Championships in 1991 and 1994. (Go Vikes!).

Throughout his life, Tommy was a devoted husband and father who recognized the importance of placing family first in his priorities. In retirement, Tommy and Barbara developed a keen interest in traveling together in their RV, finding immense enjoyment and amazement in all of nature’s beauty.

Tommy continued to tutor people in math throughout his last days. Of nearly equal importance, Tommy enjoyed cooking and grilling and he especially enjoyed sharing his culinary delights with friends, family, and a generous delivery to feed the homeless, often on a weekly basis. Tommy was also fond of biking around the neighborhood with his two Yorkies, Olivia and Bella, so they too could see and interact with the world.  Without question, Tommy led a life filled with love for his wife, son, friends, and lovable Yorkies. His wonderful attitude and extraordinary good sense of fellowship are traits that all of us can admire and attempt to emulate.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his son, T.J. Britt along with members of his extended family and his many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Britt, father, Travis and his first and much beloved Yorkie, Mandy.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021 at Fort Walton Beach First United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM with visitation between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First United Methodist Church Tuesday Morning Community Breakfast Fund, 103 First St SE, FWB, FL, 32548.
