Scott Allen Matheson, age 71, of Niceville, FL passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 27, 2021, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandson. He was born on September 21, 1949, in Duluth, MN, and graduated from H.H. Arnold High School Wiesbaden, Germany. Scott spent his early years as an adult racking up personal accomplishments. If Scott did something, half-way or just a little, was not good enough. Scott was an expert marksman, perfecting his aim with guns and bows. Scott traded all types of equestrian equipment for horses in order to raise and sell them. At one time, Scott had up to 15 horses including a Quarter Horse, Pasa Finos, and a Morgan named Noche which Scott won a Junior Men’s Championship with. Scott loved a good adventure and enjoyed river rafting, sky diving, and scuba diving, just to name a few.
Born into a military family, Scott also proudly served his country by enlisting in the Air Force in 1968. He served in Disaster Preparedness both overseas and at home during the Vietnam War. After honorably serving his country, he retired from the Air Force and continued his career serving his country as a government contractor Test Director. Over the past year, Scott worked diligently as a Test Director to test shelters designed to safely transport COVID-19 patients as well as shelters designed to protect the U.S. soldiers in the field.
Scott was an avid biker. He married his wife, Cherie, on August 6, 2008, at the Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Scott and Cherie spent the next 13 years together enjoying a life filled with one adventure after the other. The allure of riding the Mother Road, Route 66, was enough for Scott and Cherie to set out for a 32-day bike ride from Niceville to California and back. Scott was present for the WW2 Memorial Dedication in Washington D.C. and he honored the soldiers who were MIA and POWs by participating in the annual Rolling Thunder Rally nine times. One of those times, Scott and Cherie incorporated riding the entire Blue Ridge Parkway into the trip and were accompanied by their best friends.
Cruising became Scott’s more favored means to travel in the last several years. Scott and Cherie traveled to nearly all of the Caribbean Islands as well as a highlight cruise traversing the Panama Canal. Scott and Cherie collected artwork and pictures from each destination, both domestic and internationally.
In high school, Scott played in a garage band named The Other Five. Because of Scott’s and Cherie’s shared love of music, they attended many concerts from Nickleback, Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Pink Floyd tribute bands to Jimmy Buffett and everybody and most genres in-between.
And then there was sports! Having been born in Minnesota, it was no surprise that Scott was a devoted Vikings fan, however, over the last decade, his love for pro sports shifted to collegiate sports where Scott realized his deep-rooted passion for football, basketball, and baseball. For the last seven years, Scott and Cherie never missed a home football game in The Swamp cheering on the Florida Gators.
Scott is survived by his soulmate and wife, Cherie; his brother and sister, John Matheson and Mary Matheson; his children and step-children, Christina Kinsey, Sean Matheson, Cindi Harvey, and Conrad “Buck” Rhoades; and the heart of his heart – his grandchildren, Tyler Wallace, Ayden Senzig, Tristan and Glorianna Kinsey, Ethan and Aaron Harvey.
