Robert Thomas Murphy (Murf), age 80, of Mary Esther, FL, died Friday, July 24, 2020.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lesley (Baker) Murphy; his son, Oliver Murphy (Tisha); Step-children, Chas Lesley (Shelley), and Sharon Ward; his grandchildren, Alivia, Shayon, Kirsten, Cainion, Tyler, Mallory, Ethan, and Hayden, and great-granddaughter, Aniaelyce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyman Oliver Murphy and Mona Omega Murphy; sisters, Vivian Keller and Nancy Hill; brothers, Emmett Murphy and Sam Janzen; niece, Crystal Ball and cousin, Daniel Keller.
Robert was born October 23, 1939 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He and his wife, Lesley, were married in 1978. After graduating high school, he attended Troy State University, graduating in 1989 Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. He served in the Air Force for 26 years and retired as a SMSGT. After serving with the Air Force, Robert also worked for and retired from DRS.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, receiving a District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver Award (highest award presented to adults). He held scouting positions of Cub Master, District Training team, Scout-A-Rama Ticket Chairman, Fun Day, Haunted house for Scouts, and numerous other jobs. Robert volunteered for many years at Mary Esther Elementary. He would give up his lunch time once a week and would read to the Kindergarten classes. He also volunteered to proctor during state testing times.
A visitation service will be held on Tuesday, August 4th from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM at the Emerald Coast Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the Emerald Coast Funeral Home.
