On Friday, December 28, 2018. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Paul J. Smith, Jr. was called to his Heavenly Home. He was born in Goldsboro, NC, on October 31, 1944.
Paul had been stationed in Montgomery, Alabama, with the Air Force and retired at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1993 following a twenty-five year military career. He leaves behind his devoted wife of fifty years, Nancy Susan Smith, daughter, Laurie C. Hardin, son-in-law, Michael and three grandchildren, Sydney, Savannah and Maxwell Hardin, as well as his sister, Susan Davis , father-in-law Lawerence T. Heflin and nephews, nieces, grandnephew and grandnieces. He was predeceased by his son, 1Lt. Paul J. Smith III, his parents Lt. Col. (Ret.) Paul J. Smith and his mother Susan Bizzell (Smith) McFadden.
He lived in Miramar Beach, Florida, for sixteen years following his retirement from his second career with First Command Financial Planning for ten years. His hobbies included singing and he was a member of the group Destin Harmony and enjoyed metal detecting on the beaches of South Walton. His Air Force career included assignments in Intelligence, Office of Special Investigation and OSI commander at Torrejon Air Force Base near Madrid, Spain for three years, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, Air War College seminar director and AFROTC Commander at the University of Miami, Florida.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00, on Friday, January 18, 2019,
First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, Alabama. While in Montgomery, Paul served with the Stephen Ministry.
