Noel A. “DJ” Barrett

 

Noel was known to most people as “DJ”, a name he acquired during his years asa music disc jockey both before and during his Air Force career.

DJ was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to Winston and Mildred Barrett and moved to the United States when he was 10 years old. He then lived in White Plaines, NY (attending White Plaines High School), and upon graduation enlisted in the Air Force.

He spent his entire military career in the helicopter aircraft maintenance field and was stationed at or deployed to locations all over the world.  He worked on many different military and civilian aircraft. After he retired in 1995, hebrought his helicopter maintenance skills to several civilian companies working under the National Forestry Service in fighting wildfires across the United States and Mexico flying Sikorsky  CH-54 Skycrane heavy-lift helicopters. In 2009 he joined the Bell-Textron team, transitioning to fixed-wing aircraft working on the CV-22 Osprey at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

DJ grew up with five siblings, Paulette Anderson (William), Barbara Durbin (Paul), Carol Wallace (Earl), Stephanie Violante (Lou) and Marie Burroughs (Greg). DJ met his wife Jean while both were stationed at Osan Air Base, Korea, in 1986. They lived in California and Florida, raising two wonderful children.  DJ is remembered as a fun, loving, talented, giving and helpful spouse, father, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and friend.

DJ enjoyed bike riding, weightlifting, working on engines (cars and aircraft), jazz music, playing chess and proudly volunteering with the Niceville Eagle Pride Band.  He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Vanessa, son Dante, and sons Michael and Caspian (mother: Cathy Barrett) as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Interment will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road ,Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL 32508 with full military honors.  The family will be meeting and lining up for procession to the gates of Barrancas National Cemetery  by 10:30 AM at Olive Baptist Church, 103 West Winthrop Ave, Pensacola, FL 32507.
