Larry Choplin of Shalimar, FL passed away in Shalimar, FL on June 4, 2022, at the age of 82. Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Larry attended NC State where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Larry served as a navigator in the US Air Force for 25 years. He was awarded the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross for his unarmed and unescorted reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam war. Additionally, he was awarded the Bronze Star for successfully evacuating fourteen aircrews by driving through the heavy automatic fire, machine gun, grenade, and mortar fire, without regard for personal safety. After retiring from the Air Force as a Major, he worked for the civil service at Eglin Air Force Base. He later received a Master of Science in Aviation Management and Operations from Embry-Riddle.

Larry had an abundance of hobbies. Dearest to him were his pets, from the dogs and cats to the pond fish, and all his granddaughters’ hamsters in between. He enjoyed westerns and had a great passion for genealogy. He enjoyed the simple things in life, like a cold glass of wine and a warm slice of pizza, often enjoyed with his faithful companions Leo and Sadie by his side.

His death is preceded by his wife of 57 years, Linda Choplin; parents, Marie and Tommie Choplin; and sister-in-law, Judith Troutman. He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Allen (Charlie); children, Jeff Choplin and Judy Lohrman (Tony); and grandchildren, Bethany Campbell (Bill) and Megan Walkinshaw (Nick Norris).

Pooh-pa will be remembered for his love of animals. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Save Our Cats and Kittens in Fort Walton Beach, FL in his memory.

His final resting place will be alongside his late wife Linda at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL. Visitation will be on June 14, 2022, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Emerald Coast Funeral Home. The burial will be on June 15, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Barrancas National Cemetery.
