James Todd Coats

James Todd Coats, 64, passed away February 27, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Unsurpassed aviator and leader. Gifted Innovator. Superb Officer. Trusted counselor. These are just a few of the words used to describe Todd Coats. But as a man of action, he can be best defined through his 64-year legacy.

Born to James and Elaine Coats, January 12, 1957, Todd grew up with a love of family, faith, and service. He married his beautiful wife Mary Pelezo Coats August 22, 1981, and was blessed with two daughters- Chelsea and Aubrey.

Major Coats was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, who proudly served his country for over 20 years. Among his many honors and accomplishments, he received The Joint Service Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and multiple Southwest Asia Medals for service during the Persian Gulf War, as well as the distinguished Air Force Achievement Medal for his “history-making accomplishments” during Desert Storm, numerous Meritorious Service Medals for his accomplishments including the creation of the internationally recognized Air Mobility Doctrine that is still used today and The Air Force Commendation Medal for his rapid coordination and delivery of over 3 million pounds of daily humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in 2001.

Todd was a natural-born leader and helper. After retiring in 2003 he continued to serve his country and his community volunteering his time to local charities, Coastline Navarre Church, Navarre High School, or anyone who needed it.  

Todd is survived by his wife- Mary, daughters-Chelsea and Aubrey, sister- Susan, nephew- Michael Todd, his loving extended family, and the countless people whose lives he touched.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 5, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Emerald Coast Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Pittman officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be Monday, March 8, 2021 at 11:00 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Pastor Mark Cox officiating.
