Gloria Rodriguez Powell

November 12, 1930 ~ July 30, 2020 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Tribute

Gloria Rodriguez Powell entered into eternal rest and into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus on July 30, 2020.

Gloria was born in Isabela, Puerto Rico, to Catalina Rivera Rodriguez and Jose Rodriguez Bonilla on November 12, 1930.  Gloria grew up in her beloved island of enchantment, Puerto Rico, surrounded by her loving family and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.  After graduating from high school, Gloria attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri.  There she met a handsome young man, Rodney, who captured her heart and shortly after became her husband of 61 years.

Gloria and Rodney, soon settled in Isabela, Puerto Rico.  While raising a young family, Gloria attended the Royal Commercial College in Arecibo, where she earned a degree in Secretarial Science.  Gloria was an English substitute teacher at the local elementary school as well as St. Anthony’s Catholic School.

Gloria was a wonderful example of a loving, caring daughter, who honored and served her parents.  She was a loving mother who always sacrificed her needs for the wellbeing of her children.  She was a doting and a very patient grandmother to her very energetic and loving grandchildren.

Gloria’s greatest pride and joy was her family.  She served well, loved well.  After Rodney’s retirement from Civil Service, she became his caregiver, looking after all his needs.  They were frequently seen on their “lunch dates” at local restaurants and many times holding each other’s hands.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney L. Powell; son, Rodney L. Powell, Jr., and brother, Jose Esteban Rodriguez.  Gloria is survived by her son, John Powell; daughter, Mary Serafin; son in law, Mark Serafin; brother, Dario Rodriguez; Granddaughters, Kristin, Rebecca and Chenoa; Grandson, Brian; niece, Maribel Todd and nephew, Jose Rodriguez.

Gloria was blessed with the love and sweetness of her three great grandchildren Natalie, Kate and Caleb, who showered their “Abuela” with loving hugs and kisses every time they saw her. Gloria spent the last year in the care of Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation.  She had a wonderful team taking care of her needs.  We are thankful to all the CNA’s, nurses and all the staff that made every effort to take care of her and make her not only feel comfortable, but also feel loved.  We are forever grateful for the care she received while she was a part of their family.

A funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 161 Racetrack Rd. NW, Ft. Walton Beach, FL 32547.  Gloria will be laid to rest beside her husband at Barrancas National Cemetery.
