In loving memory of George F. Kirby

George F. Kirby, age 81, died peacefully on October 2, 2020 due to complications from a stroke.  In his final moments, he was surrounded by his long-time companion and his three devoted sons.  George was born May 15, 1939 in Cheshire, Ohio as an only child to parents Briggs and Vivian Kirby.

After a wonderful childhood raised on a farm, George quickly moved on to an extensive education and career in federal service.  He had an undergraduate, a masters, and PhD studies in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from Ohio State University which all led to a Masters in Science from the prestigious university MIT.  Mr. Kirby served our country in the military as a second lieutenant, USAF until entering civilian service in 1967.  He had a long and successful career as an Aeronautical Systems Program Director at Eglin Air Force Base specializing in weaponry.  Mr. Kirby was the recipient of many distinguished Honors and Awards for his accomplishments which included the Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, the Air Force Special Achievement Award, and the S.D. Heron Award.  He retired in 2005 at the outstanding level of GM-15.

Among his career achievements, George was also blessed with a loving family.  He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife and mother of their children, Marian Kirby.  Survivors include his dear companion Diane Rogers, his sons Curtis Kirby (Amy), Chris Kirby (Jan), and Clark Kirby (Gene), and seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Brogen (Ben), Briggs, Quade, Dallas, Destin, and Elizabeth.  Over the years, George enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports (especially Gator football), bike riding to the beach, traveling, and snorkeling.  A favorite pastime was researching and collecting Indian artifacts often displayed in his office and home.  His sons vividly remember their high school years enjoying their dad’s support at many Choctaw football games and track meets.  He will be sadly missed for his love of family and his service to our country.

A time of gathering is scheduled for a graveside service, Friday, October 16, 2:00 p.m. at Fort Walton Beach Memorial Cemetery.  All friends and family are welcome to attend the service followed by a small reception at the Kirby home at 3:00 pm.  Friends are also welcome to join the family at the Hightide Seafood Restaurant after 4:30 pm -- as a final tribute to George Kirby as this was his favorite.  On-line condolences can be made at the website of Emerald Coast Funeral Home and memorial donations can be made to the American Red Cross of Northwest Florida, 9111 Sturdevant Street, Pensacola, FL 32514.
