Never to late to pay our respects to the family. Will never forget the stories Mr. Smith “Shakey” shared. Mrs. Smith gave me a picture he painted of a little boy eating a hotdog. Did some upkeep on the premises and Mrs. Smith would bring out cold water in a mason jar along with cold figs. After moving to Crestview I would stop in from time to time and visit with her for an hour or so. She was a brilliant women with an angels smile. We talked about the need for salvation and were able to say we both new Jesus Christ as our personal savior. I will see the both of them again.

It was an honor to know Miss Eloise as children experiencing her kindness helping us purchase the perfect gift for mother or grandmother with whatever meager allowance we presented. The honor continued when she allowed us to preserve not only ceramic elements and dress boxes from her dress shop but gifted us with the Eloise Shop Art Deco sign for the Magnolia Grill collection. We cherished her visits with us and are proud to to continue to share her story with our guests.

Eloise was such a delightful lady. She was always uplifting and cheerful. We regret we could not attend her memoril service. We scheduled a trip almost two years ago and are out-of-town. We will miss being able to call her to chat. She was such a distinguished, inspiring person. We loved talking about flowers and gardens as she did. . She will be missed.

Many fond memories of shopping in her shop. She was very kind and thoughtful to her young customers. I bought several beautiful dresses and suits from her. My husband of 55 years still remembers one of the suits from when we were dating. I remember her fondly.

What a kind and special lady. Mr. Smith was a lucky man to have such a woman as his partner. You probably don't know who I am, but my brothers and I were hired help at 632 Gap Creek Dr.. My first job at the age of 12 in the year of 1966, was helping plant grass clippings with Mrs. Smith. Over the next six years or so, my brothers and I did everything from cleaning and painting the house to building green houses and maintaining the yard. I will never forget how strong but also how nice Mrs. Smith was.

I met Ms Eloise only once when her brother “Dabs” and his wife Marie were visiting. She was the picture of graciousness and a southern lady. We walked the grounds at her house and admired her beautiful flowers. I regret not being able to have spent more time with her but life got in the way. My great loss. My deepest sympathy to the family and friends. Sleep well Ms. Eloise. You are home now and re-united with your beloved.

I first met Ms. Eloise in 1957 when I first met Mildred Dewrell. Mildred was my mother-in-law/best friend. She was always buying me clothes from The Eloise Shop and how I loved them. They were not only beautiful but smelled so good. I do not know her background but I lived in New York for a while also and, if you do not mind, could you please fill me in on the life of this wonderful lady. I do not know how long ago this picture was made of her but she is perfect in every way as I remember her always being perfect. My heart is full of love for all of her family, both blood and acquired.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ll miss my talks with Mrs. Smith. But I know that doesn’t compare to what you all are missing. I pray that you all find peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Eloise Smith was my most beloved aunt. I had the joy of knowing her life story which was an amazing series of unbelievable accomplishments. She excelled at every task she undertook. We were always impressed with her sharp and brilliant mind. She was a terrific conversationalist. Aunt Eloise was so kind and so charitable; she set a high bar for the family.

Loved hearing all about her life in New York City where she mastered a world most women would not even dare to enter. We were so impressed with her love for her husband Gerald. Their marriage is one of the best love stories of all time. Her love for Gerald endured to her death. I recall how she cared for Gerald during the period of illness that resulted in his death. Nearly three years of bedside dedication including closing her beloved store.

Aunt Eloise meant a lot to me and she taught me a lot as well. She will always be with us.

I first met Mrs. Eloise in 2003 while my wife, Emma has known her since 1990. She was a remarkable lady, in every sense of the word. I work overseas so I would call her periodically and we would have about an hour conversation discussing mostly current events, especially politics. We were always in agreement with each other so our conversations were happy. A truly hard working lady. When we first visited her home, she was out in the yard working with Mr. Lee. She would work from sun-up to sun-down in her flower gardens. When we went inside the house, the first thing I noticed was a stack of Wall Street Journal papers on the kitchen table. She would read those papers thoroughly each day. Her mind was sharp and she always remembered everything she said or anything someone said to her. The last time I visited her was on 27 Sep, the day before I had to go back overseas. We had a nice visit and of course, discussed politics. Before I left, I kissed her forehead and she kissed my cheek and hugged me. I told her I would try to be back in six months and come visit her. She said, "I'll be here waiting." She raised her arm and waved bye-bye and said she loved me. We are proud to have known Mrs. Eloise and will always cherish her as a very dear friend. We'll always love you Mrs. Eloise and you'll always be in our hearts. Carter & Emma Pogue
