Tribute

Retired Senior Master Sergeant Donald Leonard Giroux, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2019, in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1929, to Joseph and Evelina Giroux, Don led a long and colorful life. After reportedly being engaged nine different times, the “little French brat across the street” finally fell in love with and married a red-headed Irish girl from the neighborhood, June Marilyn Miller, on New Year’s Eve 1956. Don’s Navy and Air Force careers spanned twenty-seven years and two wars. Following his retirement from the military, Don dabbled in sales and photography before building a successful saw and knife sharpening business. He loved traveling and working the gun show circuit, and he developed many lasting friendships along the way.

Don is survived by his daughters, Micki Giroux and wife Nancy of Blairsville, GA, and Donna Giroux Boucher of Houston, TX; his grandson, Chris Boucher of Houston, TX; his loving companion and best friend of the last eight years, Jewell Messer, of Freeport, FL; and countless friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, June, both parents, and his brothers, Terry and Reggie.

Don will be laid to rest with full military honors beside June in a private service at Barrancas National Cemetery. Cancer took both Don and June, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in their names to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the 3rd floor nursing staff at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center and the staff of Covenant Hospice for their support during this difficult time.
