It is with great sadness that the family of Carrie L. Mitchell announces the passing of our beloved angel, on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at the age of 85 years after a courageous battle with cancer.

Carrie moved to the Shalimar area in 1977 when her husband SMSgt Alfonso Mitchell was assigned to Eglin AFB. She attended and faithfully served at Eglin AFB Gospel Worship Service for over 44 years. She was an active member of both the Brotherhood and Daughters of Zion choirs and the Senior Ushers Ministry. She was well known for her talent as a seamstress and has graced many over the years with her beautiful creations.

“Mom” Mitchell will be lovingly remembered by her children Teresa Totten, Shelane Weeks (Howard), Joseph “Joe” Mitchell (Christa) and godson Gavriel “Gavi” Williams. By her sisters, Willie Mae Collier (Saul), Vernell Carver and brothers Robert Gatlin, Albert Williams (Earlene) and Charles Williams (Colevia). Carrie will also be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Altonio Gause (Nickia), Adrean Mitchell, Sireeta Taylor (Kevin), Tiffany Mitchell, Dainnese Weeks, Darian Mitchell, Chris Mitchell, Miles and Marlee Mitchell (twins), eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Carrie was predeceased by her husband Alfonso, son Alton, brothers John, Thomas, and Arthur “Bo” Gatlin and Robert Harris. Carrie will also be forever remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

To honor Carrie’s request, she will be memorialized in her hometown of Ocilla, GA. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and for the safety of family and friends, the family has opted to hold the memorial service at a later date.  Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Carrie L. Mitchell to the American Cancer Society or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
