Tribute

Carolyn reunited with her beloved ‘Slip’ just 12 days after his passing.

Carolyn Losee Spears grew up in Westfield, NJ, and graduated from Greenbrier College in WV, and from Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City. When WWII started she signed up in the first class of the WAVES. Her father had been injured by gas in WWI and she was proud to serve and stayed in until the end of WWII, earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer. She worked as a Dispersing Officer in New York City. She was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

Carolyn and Byron P. "Slip" Spears met in January 1946 and it was love at first sight. They agreed to get married on their first date and married a month later. They enjoyed 72 years of wonderful, happy, and fruitful lives together.

As a lifelong Episcopalian with personal faith and cheerful resolve, Carolyn was active in church functions. She was president of her college sorority, Sigma Iota Chi, president of the Eglin Elementary School PTA, a Gray Lady hospital volunteer, and president of The Eglin AFB Retired Officer's Wives Club.

Her greatest joy was engaging in family activities such as snow and water skiing, swimming in the Gulf, traveling, and visiting parks and landmarks throughout the United States and abroad.

She is survived by her three children, Byron Jr. (Nieske), Cassandra, and James (Suzanne); seven grandchildren, Lotus Boland (Lane), Jesse Spears (Louise), Sara Spears, Victoria Spears, Jonathan Spears (Alicia), Chrystal Lenardson, and Chris Kerr; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Herbert, and nieces Roxanne Wilson, Sue Taylor, and Carol Ann Zuber.

The assistance provided by the Fort Walton Beach Rehabilitation Center and Emerald Coast Hospice has been superb and is greatly appreciated. She always had an encouraging word to staff and residents.

A private memorial service will be held at St. Simon's on the Sound

Episcopal Church and interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice.

Expressions of love may be viewed online and submitted at www.emeralcoastfuneralhome.com.
