Chaplain George R. Castillo retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1993. He began his career as a Chaplain in 1973, when he stepped into the “Big A” penitentiary, Atlanta, Georgia. The Chaplain’s journey began in Dangriga, Belize (formerly British Honduras) in 1931, where he was born. He completed the Eighth grade, the highest level of free education that a poor child could attain.
Through the blessings of God, he came to the United States in 1952 to continue his education. After his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, he began his studies at the University of Maine and Bangor Theological Seminary where he graduated in 1967 with a BA and a M. Div. Following ordination at Brewer Congregational Church, UCC in Brewer, Maine, he served as Pastor of Christ Church, UCC, /Detroit, Michigan.
The Chaplain earned his second Master Degree in Pastoral Psychology and Counseling from Ashland Seminary, Ashland, Ohio. He was later called to minister to the incarcerated and their families and the Staff of the Federal penitentiary.
Chaplain Castillo has penned some of his experiences in his book, MY LIFE BETWEEN THE CROSS AND THE BARS.
He is married to the former Muriel Jermain – Seale.
