December 3, 2017

Kayako “Kay” Johnston of Shalimar, FL, passed away on December 3, 2017. Kay was born in Tokyo, Japan to parents Keitaro and Natsu Koinuma. As a child, Kay lived through World War II, losing family members during the bombings. After the war, Kay worked for the DOD (U.S. Army). She became an American citizen in 1960, and moved to Fort Walton Beach in 1973. Kay became a Christian and was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, volunteering in the soup kitchen there for many years.. She met her husband, Captain John F. Johnston in 1988 and they married in December of 1991. Although Kay was a gourmet cook, she quickly learned the art of southern cooking, and could take a recipe and make it her own. Kay was a musician, who liked classical music and could play both the piano and organ, and even learned to like and play gospel music. Kay was a world traveler and she enjoyed being out on the water. Kay was a sweet lady, quiet, giving, strong and will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.

Predeceased by her parents, Kay is survived by her husband of 26 years, Captain John F. Johnston, her sister, Aiko Sato, and 2 nieces, in Japan

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 1400 (2pm) at Trinity United Methodist Church 403 Racetrack Rd NW, Fort Walton Beach, FL . In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in honor of Kayako to the Trinity United Methodist building fund.
